I’m clipping off one end of each piece to get a minimum opening of about 1-1/4″ (3cm) to meet my anticipated needs.
Each cut will be rounded over at my homemade disc sander. I used a lid to draw the curves.
Therefore I have to get back to the router table.
The hinges are installed at the opposite end and I took care of pre-drilling the holes for the screws.
I’m cutting three 9″ (23cm) long from a 3/8″ (10mm) threaded rod and I remove the burrs at the belt grinder.
Besides the hinges, here are the required hardware to complete the project : nuts, washers, threaded rods and T-nuts.
Optical illusion – the three rod are the same length !
After cutting three tightening knobs (think tighten) from Baltic Birch plywood, I smooth out the edges at the router table.
I couldn’t live without my new flap sanding wheel anymore ! (more to come for sure).
Birth wood being a hard wood, I must pre-drill to drive the spurs down.
C’est tout !
That’s all !
One coat of shellac to seal the wood.
This threaded rod length allows for a 4″ (10cm) opening while the clamps allocate a 9-1/2″ (25cm) depth.
Notice the nuts tightened onto one another to lock them down.
Take note that I’ve fabricated round-sided washers to prevent the knobs from rubbing on the clamps’ arm.
Here’s a typical clamping sample to glue mahogany veneer onto a poplar plank, the whole thing sandwiched betwee two MDF boards.
According to me, I rather lock the nuts on each side, as shown, even is the opening is limited to 2-1/2″ (6cm). Doing so I don’t have to use a wrench to hold them while I tighten the knobs. However, if needed I’ll be able to move them.
