Jauge de coupe en érable et ébène #5 Maple & Ebony Kerf Gauge

Sur un côté de la jauge, à l’extrémité opposée de la butée, je perce un trou pour accueillir la tête d’un boulon de carrosserie de 1/4’’ sous la surface. 

  

On one side of the gauge, at the opposite end of the stop, I counterbore for the head of a 1/4’’ carriage bolt.

Ensuite je continue le trou pour le corps du boulon.

 Then I drill through for the body of the bolt.

À l’autre extrémité je perce et j’ajoute un boulon 8-32 (ou une vis) pour le calibrer la gauge selon l’épaisseur de lame de scie lors de son utilisation.

 At the other end I drill then I add an 8-32 bolt (or a screw) to calibrate the gauge according to the thickness of the blade being used later.

Finalement, une rondelle et une vis à molette sont ajoutées pour maintenir fermement les deux pièces après qu’un ajustement sera fait.

 Finally, a washer and a wing-nut or a knurled nut are added to tighten the two pieces together after an adjustment is made.

Pour couper la petite languette de bois d’ébène, je place un morceau de bois derrière elle pour prévenir le bris, l’éjection et les écorchures.

  

To cut the ebony strip, I back it up with a piece of wood to prevent breakage, ejection and tearouts.

De retour au crochet d’établi, quelques passes avec la varlope suffisent pour amincir la languette d’ébène au même niveau du corps en érable.

  

Back to the bench hook, few passes with the handplane are sufficiant to thin down the ebony strip to the same level as the maple body.

Après avoir coupé une tranche d’un morceau d’ébène, je dresse un côté avec la varlope.

  

After ripping a slice from a piece of ebony, I plane one side with a handplane.

J’ai fait une rainure dans une des pièces d’érable feuillurée et je coupe une languette d’ébène pour l’y insérer.

 

I made a groove in one of the rabetted pieces of maple and I rip a strip of ebony to slip it in.

De retour au crochet d’établi, j’ajuste la languette à la largeur de la rainure avec la varlope.

 

Back to the bench hook, I thin down the strip to the width of the groove with the handplane.

Un petit filet de colle est suffisant pour retenir la languette dans la rainure.

 

A small bead of glue is sufficiant to keep the strip in the groove.

Les pièces maîtresses montrées à gauche serviront à la fabrication de la jauge. La seconde a été utilisée pour jauger la rainure et est maintenant une pièce de rechange.

  

The master pieces shown at left will be used for the fabrication of the gauge. The other was the test piece and now is a spare.

Après avoir dressé une face à la dégauchisseuse, je plane la face opposée à la raboteuse (planeur). Compte tenu que les pièces sont trop courtes pour une coupe sécuritaire, je les fixe temporairement à une pièce de Mélamine avec du ruban adhésif double-face.

  

After flattening one face at the jointer, I plane the opposite face at the planer. Since the pieces are too short for a safe cut, I temporarily tape them to a Melamine board with double-sided tape.

Avec un maillet je m’assure d’une adhérence optimale.

 

Using a mallet I get an optimum bond.

Le plateau de Mélamine glisse dans la raboteuse et les pièces sont ainsi amincies uniformément et sécuritairement.

 

The Melamine platform slides in the planer and the pieces are safely milled to a uniform thickness .

Je décolle les pièces du plateau de Mélamine avec le coin d’un ciseau à bois. Tout un exploit !

 

I remove the pieces from the Melamine board using the corner of a wood chisel. That’s a challenge!

À la table à toupie je façonne une feuillure à mi-bois exactement, raison pour laquelle j’utilise deux morceaux de bois (les deux sont en érable).

 

At the router table I mill a rabbet, exactly half thickness of the board, reason why I use a second piece of wood (both are maple).
