Voilà la ponceuse verticale, bien en équilibre, sur le bord de mon banc de travail.

 

Here is the edge sander, steady, overhanging over the edge of my workbench.

Pour ajouter au luxe, j’ai percé deux trous de 1/4’’ sur le dessus de la poignée, un pour recevoir un goujon qui portera un manchon supplémentaire, et l’autre pour garder à porter de main un autre support de manchon.

 

To add to the luxery, I drilled two 1/4’’ holes on the top of the handle, one to receive a dowel to hold a second sanding sleeve, and the other to keep close a second drum sander.

J’ai la chance d’avoir du MDF recouvert d’une mince couche de film plastique. Je perce et je fraise pour les vis.

 

I’m lucky to have MDF laminated with a thin coat of plastic film. I drill and I chamfer for the screws.

Encore une fois, la poignée dans l’étau, je colle et visse la base à la poignée.

 

Once again, the handle held in the vise, I glue and screw the base to the handle.

À l’autre extrémité de la base, j’ajoute un goujon de 1-1/2’’ de diamètre comme deuxième poignée.

 

At the other end of the base, I add this 1-1/2’’ dowel to act as a second handle.

Après avoir couper la base de MDF 3/4’’ d’épaisseur à 7’’ par 16’’, je fraise toutes les arêtes à la table à toupie.

 

After cutting the 3/4’’-thick MDF base 7’’ by 16’’, I chamfer all edges at the router table.

À ma ponceuse à disque maison, j’adouci tous les coins.

At my shopmade disk sander, I smooth all corners.

Au banc de scie, je fais deux rainures peu profondes pour les collets.

 

At the tablesaw, I make two shallow dadoes for the hose clips.

Je retiens la poignée dans l’étau pour percer les avant-trous.

 

I hold the handle in the vise to drill the pilot holes.

J’insère les collets et je colle et visse le support vertical à la poignée.

Dans un morceau de MDF 5’’ par 9’’ de 3/4’’ d’épaisseur je perce deux trous de 1’’ de diamètre pour façonner la poignée.

 

In a 5’’ by 9’’ piece of 3/4’’-thick MDF I drill two 1’’ holes that will become the handle.

La poignée maintenue dans l’étau, je complète la rainure avec la scie sauteuse.

 

The handle in the vise, I cut the slot with the jigsaw.

Maintenue dans l’étau, je lime grocièrement l’intérieur de la rainure de la poignée.

Finalement, j’adouci la rainure à ma ponceuse verticale maison.

Finally, I’m sanding smooth the slot at my shopmade spindle sander.

Tous les rebords, sauf la partie inférieure, sont fraisés avec la toupie à ébarber munie d’un fer à chanfreiner.

 

All edges, except the lower part, are chamfered with the trim router outfitted with a chamfering bit.

Shopmade Portable Edge Sander #1 Ponceuse verticale portative

 

Ayant à poncer plusieurs chantournements lors de la construction de mes vaisseliers, j’en suis venu à me fabriquer cette ponceuse portative.

 

Having to sand several curved rails while building my kitchen hutches, I came up with the idea of making this portable edge sander.

Je pars avec l’idée d’utiliser une perceuse électrique à vitesse variable de 2200 tpm. Pour m’assurer que le manchon de ponçage soit perpendiculaire à la base, je monte une tige dans le mandrin et me guide avec une retaille pour vérifier l’alignement.

 

I start with the idea of using a 2200 RPM variable speed electric drill. To ensure that the sanding sleeve will be perpendicular to the base, I insert a rod in the chuck and check the alignment with a scrap wood.

Pour que la tige soit parallèle à la retaille, il faut que j’insère une cale, ici un bâtonnet à café ou de sucette glacée du genre Popsicle. Vous pouvez aussi la voir sur la photo précédente, à gauche.

 

To get the rod parallel to the scrap wood, I must insert a shim, here a coffee stick or Popsicle stick. You can see it on the previous picture, on the left side.

J’installe un support de manchon dans le mandrin et j’indique où placer un collet pour retenir la perceuse sur une pièce de 2’’ par 10’’ qui servira de support vertical à la perceuse.

 

I install a drum sander in the chuck and I mark where to place a hose clip that will hold the drill on a 2’’ by 10’’ piece of wood that will become the vertical support for the drill.

J’utilise la table à toupie pour chanfreiner les rebords afin d’accueillir adéquatement les collets. Ces coupes auraient pû être faites au banc de scie.

 

I use the router table to chamfer the edges to adequately fit the hose clips around. These cuts could have been made at the tablesaw.
