Pour ajouter les charnières, j’ai découpé des coins pour stabiliser la porte temporairement.

To add hinges, I milled few wedges to temporarily freeze the door.

Après avoir décidé où les placer, j’utilise du ruban pour marquer leur centre.

After making the decision where to put them, I’m using masking tape to mark their center.

Les quatre outils que j’ai choisis pour fixer la partie intérieure des charnières (penser espace restreint).

The four tools I chosen to attach the inner part of the hinges (think tight space).

J’utilise le miroir pour localiser le pointeau pour l’avant-trou.

I’m using the mirror to locate the awl for the pilot hole.

Les charnières installées sur le champ de la façade, j’utilise les vis pour marquer leur emplacement exact sur la porte, pour ensuite percer les avant-trous et enfoncer les vis.

Remarquez les trous allongés (flèche) pour ajustement futur si requis.

The hinges installed onto the edge of the face frame, I’m using the screws to mark their exact location on the door, then drill the pilot holes and drive the screws in.

Notice the elongated holes (arrow) for further adjustment is required.

N’ayant que deux mains (dommage), voici comment je me suis pris  pour stabiliser la porte, à chaque extrémité.

Having only two hands (too bad), here’s how I managed to stabilize the door, on both ends.

Un coin près de chaque charnières me permettent de faire des ajustements précis.

A wedge close to each hinge allow me to make precise adjustments.

Une fois la porte bien placée, j’enfonce cette dernière vis (flèche), laquelle bloque le tout. Tel que mentionné, les autres trous étaient allongés pour permettre l’ajustement final.

Once the door well set in place, I’m driving this last screw (arrow), which locks down everything. As mentioned, the other holes were elongated to allow for final adjustment.

Oups, je vais tenter une réparation avec un crayon de cire, un pistolet à air chaud et un polissage.

Oops, I will try a repair using a wax crayon, an hot gun and a buffing.

J’ai voulu énumérer et démontrer toutes les étapes qui, vues une à la fois, sont en fait très simples. Il existe des méthodes plus traditionnelles, et ardues, mais je crois que celles que j’ai présentées sont tout à fait réalisables et adéquates. Le plus difficile à mon avis est d’oser, de se faire confiance, d’avoir le temps et surtout la patience pour bien réaliser chacune des étapes, et tel que j’ai vécu, avoir l’humilité et le courage de corriger les erreurs ou défauts rencontrés au cours du processus, si possible bien entendu.

I wanted to list and demonstrate all the steps which, taken one at a time, are actually very simple. There are more traditional and arduous methods, but I believe that those I have presented are quite feasible and adequate. The most difficult thing in my opinion is to dare, to trust yourself, to have the time and above all the patience to carry out each of the stages well, and as I have lived, to have the humility and the courage to correct errors or defects encountered during the process, if possible of course.

Building a Pine Armoire #13 Réaliser une armoire en pin

J’ai choisi ces charnières enveloppantes sans mortaise pour la facilité d’installation, la robustesse grâce aux nombreux trous pour vis, ainsi que pour le design rustique.

I chose those non-mortising and wrapping hinges for their easy installation, the strength provided by so many holes for screws, as well as the rustic design.

La largeur finale de la porte est déterminée par l’ouverture, l’épaisseur des charnières et un espace adéquat pour éviter le frottement contre le montant gauche (ici) de la carcasse.
La ligne rouge indique l’angle approximatif et la direction de la coupe biseautée requise pour toutes portes pour éviter ledit frottement.

The final width of the door is established by the opening, the thickness of the hinges and an adequate gap to prevent it from rubbing against the left face frame (here) of the carcass.

The red line shows the approximate angle and bevel cut course required on all doors to prevent the above noted rubbing.

The top of my door is not straight (circle), what should be fixed.

J’ai pincé une planche bien droite (flèche) le long du haut de la porte pour y appuyer le roulement de cette fraie à araser montée dans l’ébarbeuse et ainsi éliminer les inégalités (cercle).

I clamped a straight board (arrow) along the top of the door for this flush bearing bit mounted on my trim router to ride against therefore eliminate those unevenness (circle).

La teinture maintenant, la porte et ensuite la carcasse. Deux couches de la mienne (vinaigre et laine d’acier marinés) suivies par une du commerce, couleur pin clair.

Now the stain, the door first and then the carcass. Two coats of my own (marinated vinegar and steel wool) followed by a store bought, clear pine color.

J’ai temporairement ajouté du ruban cache (cercle) parce que je ne veux pas teindre l’intérieur, donc éviter les bavures disgracieuses.

I added masking tape (circle) because I don’t want to stain the inside, hence  prevent any ugly mess.

J’ai ajouté cette dernière photo parce que sur la précédente la porte semble plus foncée, ce qui n’est pas le cas selon ce point de vue.

I added this last photo because on the previous one the door seems darker, what is not the case according to this point of view.

Once dry, the stain will be darker, as shown on the scrap.

Enfin je procède au collage, d’une extrémité à l’autre, sur un seul montant pour le moment, mais pas une seule goutte de colle dans les rainures, uniquement sur les tenons flottants, les mortaises et les champs adjacents.

At last, time for the glue up, from one end to the other, on a one style for now, but not a single drop of glue in the grooves, only on the floating tenons, the mortises and the adjacent edges.

Building a Pine Armoire #11 Réaliser une armoire en pin

Avant de procéder au collage des panneaux flottants, j’ai pris soin de protéger la tige d’acier des serre-joints avec du ruban plastique adhésif.

Before proceeding gluing the floating panels, I took care protecting the clamp steel bars by applying plastic adhesive tape.

La fraise que j’ai choisie pour profiler le périmètre des panneaux flottants.

The router bit I chose to mill the perimeter of the floating panels.

Pour une telle tâche, ma table horizontale maison (lien) est idéale.

For such task, my homemade horizontal router table (link) is ideal.

Petit à petit, je hausse la fraise jusqu’au résultat parfait (cercle) sur une chute d’un panneau.

Little by little, I raise the bit until a perfect result (circle) on a panel scrap piece.

Une fois la hauteur finale établie, j’ajoute une butée.

Once the final height established, I add a stop block.

Une fois sec, j’ai remarqué que le panneau inférieur avait tordu (flèche).

Once dry, I noticed the lower panel had twisted (arrow).

Compte tenu que ce panneau pourrait faire tordre la porte entière une fois assemblée, j’ai refait un autre panneau, mais cette fois-ci utilisant trois  pièces au lieu de deux.

Ce qui doit d’être fait mérite d’être bien fait !

Since this panel could twist the entire door when assembled, I’ve done another panel, but this time using three boards instead of two.

What needs to be done worth to be done right!

To confirm my notes, I’m checking once again the panel final width.

For the other end, final length, I’m using the table saw rip fence.

Now, the sanding.

J’utilise un linge imbibé d’hydrate de méthyle, lequel ne redresse pas le grain du bois, pour m’assurer qu’il n’y a pas de marque de ponçage.

My using a rag saturated with denatured alcohol, which doesn’t raise the wood grain, to make sure there are no sanding marks.

Puisque la hauteur de la fraise est actuellement à sa position finale (chute d’essai), je dois reculer le support d’ajustement de la hauteur (flèche), et ainsi abaisser la fraise.

Since the router bit height is currently set to its final position (test scrap), I must back up the height adjustment support (arrow), hence lowering the bit.

Ici on peut constater que la fraise est plus basse. Notez le couvre-oreilles et le masque.

Here you can observe the lowered bit. Notice the earmuff and the dust mask.

Puisque la butée est atteinte et que le panneau est encore un tantinet épais, j’ajoute du papier pour peaufiner la profondeur de coupe.

Since the stop has been reached and the panel is still a tiny bit thick, I’m adding paper to fine tune the cut depth.

La porte étant assemblée temporairement, ce trace l’emplacement de chaque côté des traverses et ensuite celles des rainures pour les panneaux flottants (flèche).

The door being temporarily assembled, I’m marking from each side the location of the rails and then the ones for the  floating panel grooves.

Cette fraise à rainurer sera parfaite puisque la largeur des couteaux correspondent au tiers de l’épaisseur du cadre de la porte.

This slot cutting bit will be perfect since the width of the cutters corresponds to the third of door frame thickness.

Cette jauge multifonctions, de la même épaisseur que les couteaux, me sert de gabarit pour ajuster la profondeur de coupe de la toupie (défonceuse).

This set-up bar, the same thickness as the cutters, acts as a gauge to set the depth of the router.

Je prends la distance entre le couteau et le bord de la semelle de ma toupie (flèche).

I’m taking the distance between the cutter and the edge of my router base (arrow).

Une à une, j’assujetti mes pièces sur des rebus, laissant juste assez d’espace pour y passer la fraise.

One by one, I secure my pieces on scraps, leaving just enough gap to get the bit through.

Une fois les rainures effectuées, je réajuste la fraise au niveau de la semelle pour réaliser une feuillure sur le périmètre des panneaux flottants, mais sur une chute pour le moment.

Once the slots done, I reset the bit in line with the base to mill a rabbet on the perimeter of the floating panels, but on a scrap piece for now.

Une passe est c’est fait pour un résultat parfait, tel que montré sur la chute (flèche).

One pass and it’s done for a perfect result, as shown on the scrap piece (arrow).

Une fraise à panneaux insérée dans la table à toupie, je m’amuse avec des pièces martyres pour déterminer quel motif, donc qu’elle fraise, j’utilisai plus tard.

A panel raising bit installed on the router table, I’m playing with test pieces to determine which shape, therefore witch bit I will used later.

Après un nouvel assemblage à sec, je peux prendre les dimensions exactes des panneaux, et ce jusqu’au fond des rainures, tout en laissant un espace pour leur expansion future.

After another dry assembly, I can take the panels exact dimensions, and that from the bottom of the slots, while leaving a gap for their future expansion.

Enfin, me revoici.

Ici je procède à la fabrication de tenons identiques à celui que j’ai utilisé pour mes tests. Je commence par tracer la profondeur de depuis chaque extrémité.

Here I’m proceed making tenons identical to the one I used for my tests. I’m starting by marking the depth from each end.

I ripped, planed and sanded those boards the same width and the same thickness as my tenon template.
