Tool Stand Storage Drawer #5 Tiroir de rangement de support d’outil

Utilisant un morceau comme guide, ici j’ajoute une mince languette (brune) sur l’intérieur de la façade et de l’arrière. Celles-ci supporteront un petit tiroir coulissant qui pourra être déplacé à gauche et à droite pour accéder au fond.

Using a guide board, here I’m adding a thin strip (brown) on the inside of the face and the back. These latter will support a small sliding drawer that will move left and right to give access to the bottom.

Maintenant, fermer l’arrière. J’étends une ligne de colle sur l’arrière du caisson.

Now, closing the back. I spread a bead of glue on the back of the casing.

J’ai coupé le panneau arrière fait d’un panneau durci (Masonite) de 1/8’’ d’épaisseur.

I cut to size the back panel made out of 1/8’’ thick hardboard (Masonite).

Compte tenu de sa minceur, j’ai utilisé des broches plutôt que des clous.

Because it is thin, I used staples instead of nails.

Finalement j’ai glissé le caisson sous ma dégauchisseuse, et ensuite j’y ai inséré le tiroir.

Finally I slipped the casing under my jointer, and then I inserted the drawer.

J’ai ajouté (vissé) un morceau dans chaque coin pour fixer le caisson et prévenir tout mouvement ou glissement.

I added (screwed) a scrap at each corner to frezze the casing and prevent any move or splipping.

De plus, le dessus du caisson pourrait servir de tablette supplémentaire, mais j’ai décidé de ranger des matériaux sur les rails du support d’outil, et d’y placer ce caisson de tiroirs que j’ai fabriqué dernièrement.

Besides that, the top of the casing could be used as additional shelf, but I dediced to store some items on the tool stand rails, and to nest this drawer cabinet I built lately.

Tool Stand Storage Drawer #4 Tiroir de rangement de support d’outil

Voici la méthode que j’ai développée pour installer ce type de coulisses de tiroirs. Je trace une ligne sur les côtés du tiroir (déposé sur le banc de travail) me guidant sur une languette parallèle.

Here is the method I developped to install this type of drawer slides. I draw a line on the drawer sides (sitting on the workbench) using a parallel guide strip.

Je dépose la partie étroite de la coulisse sur la ligne, en ligne avec la façade. Sur la photo la façade est à extrémité éloignée. L’autre partie de la coulisse sera utilisée plus tard.

I drop the narrow part of the slide on the line, in line with the drawer front. On the picture the drawer front is at the further end. The other part of the slide will be used later.

À l’aide d’un poinçon je marque le centre des rainures verticales. Ces dernières servent à l’ajustement vertical ultérieur, si nécessaire.

Using a punch I mark the centre of the vertical slots. These latter are used to make further vertical adjustment, if required.

J’ajuste la profondeur du foret de grosseur approprié aux vis pour ne pas transpercer le côté.

I set the depth of the appropriate screw size drill bit so it won’t go through the side.

Trois vis dans les trois rainures verticales suffisent pour le moment.

Three screws in the three vertical slots are sufficient for the moment.

Sur les côtés intérieurs du caisson, le trace une ligne avec la même languette. Compte tenu que je veux que le tiroir soit 1/4’’ au-dessus du fond du caisson, j’ajoute une deuxième languette de 1/4’’ pour tracer la ligne de chaque côté.

On the inside face of the casing sides, I draw a line using the same strip. Since I want the drawer to be 1/4’’ above the casing bottom, I add a second 1/4’’ strip to draw the line on each side.

Cette fois-ci j’utilise les rainures horizontales.

This time I use the horizontal slots.

Une fois le tiroir bien ajusté, je déplace et j’ajoute des vis dans tous les trous ronds pour fixer le tout.

Once the drawer has been adjusted, I move and I add screws in all round holes to freeze the assembly.

Tool Stand Storage Drawer #3 Tiroir de rangement de support d’outil

Je vais recouvrir les rebords du tiroir de languettes de Mélamine.

I will line the drawer side edges with Melamine strips.

Après avoir collé la languette avec un fer à repasser chaud, je m’assure d’une bonne prise en glissant une pièce de bois sur la languette et ensuite je découpe avec l’ébarbeuse manuelle.

After gluing the strip with a hot household iron, I’m assuring a good bond by sliding a stick of wood along the strip and then I cut it with a trimming  jig.

Finalement un bloc à poncer adouci les arêtes coupantes.

Finally a sanding block smooths out all sharp edges.

Ici j’aligne le fond, qui a été percé selon ma méthode déjà expliquée, sur les côtés du tiroir et je perce les côtés pour recevoir les vis.

Here I’m aligning the bottom, which has been drilled according to my method already described, on the sides of the drawer and I drill the sides to receive the screws.

Les serre-joints empêcheront les pièces de glisser et fixent l’alignement.

The clamps will prevent the pieces from slipping and freeze the alignment.

Avant d’aller plus loin, je vérifie avec une règle si la première vis centrale n’a pas courbé/déplacé le côté.

Before going any further, I’m checking with a straight edge if the first screw didn’t bind/move the side.

Tool Stand Storage Drawer #2 Tiroir de rangement de support d’outil

Je me prépare à fabriquer le tiroir à l’aide de la scie circulaire, un guide maison, et mes poutres en I pour surélever les panneaux à couper.

I’m getting ready to build the drawer using a circular saw, a shopmade edge guide, and my I-beams to raise the panels to be cut.

Pour déterminer la largeur exacte du fond du tiroir, je place temporairement les glissières, je mesure, coupe et vérifie jusqu’à ce que j’obtienne un ajustement parfait. C’est un moyen infaillible. Les deux languettes ne servent qu’à élever le fond temporairement.

To determine the exact width of the drawer, I temporarily drop the slides, measure, cut and verify until I get a perfect fit. This is a fool proof method. The two strips are used only to temporarily raise the bottom.

Après avoir coupé la largeur, ici je coupe la profondeur.

After cutting to width, here I cut the depth.

J’ai inséré des cales de 1/4’’ pour prendre cette mesure pour en arriver à ce que le fond du tiroir ne frotte pas sur le dessous du caisson.

I’ve inserted 1/4’’ shims to take this measurement to prevent the bottom of the drawer from rubbing against the bottom of the casing.

Au banc de scie je coupe quatre côtés identiques.

At the tablesaw I cut four identical sides.

Les quatre côtés coupés, je mesure et coupe chacun afin qu’ils s’assoient sur les rebords du fond.

The four sides cut, I measure and cut each one so they will sit on the edge of the bottom.

Truc / Tip

Pour déterminer la longueur des côtés du tiroir, j’approche la façade et l’arrière près du rebord et je mesure depuis l’arrière du fond jusqu’au qu’au rebord intérieur de ces dernières pièces, comme montré (21-3/4’’).

To determine the length of the side of the drawer, I bring the face and the back together near the edge and I measure from the back of the bottom up to the inside of the two latter pieces, as shown (21-3/4’’).

Avant de me diriger à la perceuse à colonne pour percer les trous pour les vis, je marque au poinçon chacun des emplacements, comme d’habitude.

Before heading to the drill press to bore the holes for the screws, I mark each location with a punch, as usual.

L’assemblage est facilité avec ce serre-joint pour cadre et ma table de serrage et d’assemblage maison.

The assembly is much easier with this framing clamp and my shopmade clamp and assembly worktable.

Tool Stand Storage Drawer #1 Tiroir de rangement de support d’outil

J’ai acheté ma dégauchisseuse en 1978. Ce modèle est doté d’une base en métal à pieds écartés, à laquelle j’ai ajouté une base mobile. J’ai dernièrement réalisé que je pourrais utiliser l’espace entre les pieds en y ajoutant un grand tiroir.

I bought my jointer in 1978. This model was equiped with a splayed leg metal base, in which I added a mobile base. Lately I realized that I could use the space between the legs by adding a large drawer.

Je commence par construire le caisson avec de la Mélamine blanche 5/8’’ d’épaisseur. J’utilise ce matériau pour éclaircir mon atelier de sous-sol.

I’m starting by building the casing with 5/8’’ thick white Melamine. I’m using this material to brighten my basement workshop.

Je coupe à dimension au banc de scie, appuyé sur le guide de refente.

I cut to size at the tablesaw, sliding along the rip fence.
