My New Bowl Turning Techniques / Mes nouvelles techniques de tournage de bol

Ma scie à ruban étant présentement équipée d’une lame à refendre large, il m’est venu à l’esprit de couper les coins à la scie à onglets pour diminuer les contrecoups au tour à bois.

My band saw being currently set up with a wider blade for resawing, I came up with the idea of using the miter saw to cut corners to reduce knockings at the wood lathe.

Mon tour à bois ne possédant pas de loquet, un puissant aimant terre-rare (flèche) vient à la rescousse en retenant un des leviers du mandrin en place dans l’arbre du tour.

My lathe lacking of lock of a pin, a strong rare-earth magnet (arrow) comes to the rescue by holding one of the chuck levers in the lathe arbor.

Ainsi je peux me concentrer sur l’autre levier pour bien serrer le mandrin contre la poupée fixe.

Doing so I can concentrate on the second lever to tighten the chuck against the headstock.

La même chose s’applique lorsque j’insère et serre la vis dans le mandrin (cercle).

The same thing applies when I insert and tighten the worm screw in the chuck (circle).

La vis de mon mandrin étant très longue, il est difficile de monter et défaire une pièce.

The worm screw of my chuck being quite long, it is difficult to mount and remove a workpiece.

En ajoutant une cale de contreplaqué je peux ainsi réduire de moitié cette longueur tout en gardant une prise sécuritaire.

By adding a plywood shim I can shorten half the length while getting a secure grip still.

L’ajout d’une lampe DEL à bras flexible permet une meilleur visibilité, surtout dans les cavités.

By adding a flexible arm LED lamp allows for better visibility, particularly in cavities.

À l’étape du ponçage de ce bol, mon support de bandes abrasives bien organisé est pratique et rapide.

At this bowl sanding step, my well organized sanding belt support is handy and fast.

Lors du polissage je me suis vite aperçu que je devrai couper les coins de ma cale (cercle).

While buffing I soon noticed that I should nip off the corners of my shim (circle).

Pour économiser temps et énergie, le même aimant terre-rare est plus rapide et pratique que le ruban adhésif pour servir de jauge de profondeur.

To save time and energy, the same rare-earth is quicker and handier than tape to act as a depth gauge.

Pour ménager la lame aiguisée de mes ciseaux, j’aime bien faire un premier forage avec un foret Forstner.

To spare my chisel sharp edges, I like to bore first with a Forstner bit.

Ensuite un second forage pour déterminer la profondeur du bol, et je sors les ciseaux à tourner.

Then a second boring to set the depth of the bowl, then I bring the turning tools.

Un autre bol de terminé, ou presque.

Another completed bowl, I mean almost.

J’ai ce qu’il faut pour éliminer le tenon et ajouter mon estampe de signature.

I have what’s needed to get rid of the tenon and add my signature stamp.

Celui-ci est pour mon frère cadet qui vient me visiter de temps à autre.

This one is for my younger brother who comes for a visit once in a while.

Et pour ceux que ça intéresse, mon nouveau tour est arrivé et assemblé. Il ne manque que le mandrin approprié, lequel devrait arriver d’ici peu. Qu’il est pesant, donc très stable !

And for the one who’s interested, my new lathe has arrived and is assembled. Only the appropriate chuck is missing, which should arrive soon. It is so heavy, therefore very stable !
