Trim Solid Wood Edge Banding / Araser une bande de bois massif sur champ

Il est plus facile d’araser ce genre de bande plutôt que de tenter de la réaliser de la bonne largeur au départ, et encore plus difficile de la coller au bon endroit.

It is easier to trim flush such edge banding instead of trying to make it to the exact width from scratch, and even more difficult to glue it to the right location.

Toutes ces pièces sont inversées sur une surface plane, en occurrence mon établi.

• La pièce B est ajoutée pour supporter la toupie (défonceuse) au même niveau que la pièce A à araser.
• La pièce D est temporairement ajoutée pour support la cale C lors du serrage de l’ensemble.

All those pieces are reversed onto a flat surface, in instance my workbench.

• Piece B is added to support the router leveled with part A to be routed flush.
• Piece D is temporarily added to support C shim while clamping the assembly.

Passons à la table à toupie (défonceuse) :

Pour réaliser cette tâche à la table à toupie il faut ajouter un guide auxiliaire en laissant un espace inférieur pour la bande, tel que montré.

To take this task to the router table you must add an auxiliary fence leaving a lower gap for the edge banding, as shown,

À l’aide d’une équerre, le guide est ajusté au même niveau que le roulement de la fraise.

Using a square, the fence is set even with the router bit bearing.

As usual, the workpiece is fed right to left to cut it flush.

Gluing Solid Wood Edge Banding / Coller une bande de bois massif sur champ

Une amie doit venir chez moi pour obtenir de l’aide à coller des bandes de bois massif sur les champs de tiroirs fabriqués d’aggloméré laminé. Avant de procéder, je veux essayer une technique que j’ai récemment vue à la télé. Je ne veux surtout pas perdre cette amie !

A friend of mine will come over to get some help gluing solid wood edge banding to her laminated presswood drawers. Before proceeding, I want to try a technique that I saw on TV . I certainly don’t want to lose that friend !

Une chute d’aggloméré laminée est sécurisée dans l’étau et j’ai découpé une bande de bois massif un peu plus longue et plus large que le champ à couvrir.

A laminated presswood scrap is secured in the bench vise and I’ve cut a solid wood edge band a bit longer and wider than the edge to be covered.

J’étends la colle sur le champ, tel que montré.

I spread the glue onto the edge, as shown.

J’ai déposé la pièce sur le champ et après des glissements de va-et-vient elle s’y est fermement fixée (astuce à retenir).

I dropped the piece on the edge and after back and forth moves it firmly stock to it (a tip to remember).

J’ai préalablement coupé des pièces de chambre à air de vélo.

I previously cut bicycle inner tube pieces.

J’insère chaque extrémité aux bouts de pinces à ressorts.

I insert each end onto the tips of the spring clamps.

Le pince le tout sur la bande et je presse vers le bas pour étirer la chambre à air, générant ainsi  une forte pression de serrage.

I clamp the assembly onto the band and I press downwards to stretch the inner tube, therefore generating a huge amount of pressure.

Je crois que quatre seront plus que suffisantes.

I believe four will be more than enough.

It’s getting late, I will trim the band tomorrow.

Ripping Long Taper at the Table Saw / Couper un long biseau au banc de scie

Un lecteur m’a demandé quelle technique j’utiliserais pour couper une longue pièce en biseau au banc de scie. Son projet est l’installation de lambris. J’ai pensé partager cette technique avec tous mes autres lecteurs.

Pour cette démonstration, ma planche fait 6 pied de long (±2 mètres).

A reader asked which technique I would use to taper a long board at the table saw. His project is installing wainscot. I thought about sharing this technique with all my remaining readers.

For this demonstration my board is 6 feet long (± 2 meters).

Pour couper la planche de gauche, j’ai besoin de la pièce rectiligne de droite, cette dernière étant un peu plus longue.

To rip the left board, I need the straight right piece, this latter being a bit longer.

J’applique plusieurs rubans double-face le long de la partie que je veux garder.

I apply several double-sided tapes along the part of the board I want to keep.

Ensuite je dépose la pièce juste à gauche de la ligne de coupe.

Then I drop the piece right to the left of the cut line.

Tel que montré, j’ai ajouté mon guide auxiliaire en L maison au guide parallèle de la scie.

As shown, I added my L-shape auxiliary fence to the rip fence.

Je glisse le guide parallèle vers la lame de scie, laquelle est descendue juste au-dessous du guide auxiliaire, et je l’aligne avec une équerre, tel que montré.

I slide the rip fence towards the saw blade, which is lowered shy under the auxiliary fence, and I use a square to align it, as shown.

Il ne reste qu’à couper la planche en appuyant et maintenant la pièce rectiligne contre le guide auxiliaire.

You only have to rip the board leaning and keeping the straight piece against the auxiliary fence.

Pocket Hole Step Drill Bit Setting / Réglage du foret étagé pour vis cachées

Il peut être rageant de régler la profondeur du foret étagé du gabarit pour vis cachées. La difficulté est qu’il faut maintenir en même temps le foret lui-même, le collet, une clé Allen et une règle et ce avec uniquement deux mains.

It can be tricky to set the depth of a pocket hole step drill. The problem is that you have to manipulate the drill bit itself, a stop collar, an Allen key and a ruler at the same time with only two hands.

On peut régler ce problème en utilisant un aimant (encerclé) pour temporairement indiquer la profondeur sur du foret depuis la partie étagée, tel que déterminé par le fabriquant. Ici deux mains sont suffisantes.

You can solve the issue by using a rare-earth magnet (circled) to temporarily indicate the depth on the drill bit from the step part, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Here two hands are enough.

Ensuite glissez le collet et fixez-le avec la clé Allen. Encore une fois, deux mains sont suffisantes. Notez que l’écrou Allen doit être lâche afin que l’aimant ne soit attiré et glisse vers le collet.

Then slip the stop collar and tighten it with the Allen key. Once again, two hands are enough. Note that the Allen screw must be loose so the magnet won’t be attracted and creep towards the collar.

Pour le rangement, l’aimant sera aussi utile pour y attacher la clé Allen. Notez le bouchon de liège à l’extrémité pour protéger la pointe. Ce liège doit être sec pour prévenir la rouille.

For storage, the magnet will also be useful to keep the Allen key on. Note the cork at the end to protect the tip. This cork must be dry to prevent rust.

Perfectly Flat Jointed Boards / Planches dégauchies parfaitement plates

Nous pourrions aussi parler de planches mathématiquement plates.

Pour obtenir des planches collées parfaitement à plat, il faut que le guide de la dégauchisseuse soit parfaitement d’équerre avec la table. Si non, plus le collage est large, plus les risques d’obtenir un résultat autre que parfaitement plat sont grands.

Voici une technique facile et efficace pour obtenir uniquement des panneaux parfaitement plats.

We also could talk about mathematically flat boards.

To get perfectly flat glued up boards, the jointer’s fence must be perfectly square to the table. If not, the larger the glue up, the greater the risk to get anything but flat result.

Here is an easy and effective technique to get only perfectly flat panels.

J’ai numéroté chaque ensemble et j’y ai tracé le triangle de l’ébéniste afin de revenir à l’alignement initial lors du collage.

I numbered each set and I traced on each one the cabinetmaker’s triangle to get back to the initial alignment while gluing up.

Tel que montré, j’ai tracé à la craie un X d’un côté de chaque joint.

As shown, I marked an X with a chalk on one side of each joint.

À la dégauchisseuse, d’équerre ou non à la table, je passe chaque planche m’assurant que le X éloigné du guide, tel que montré.

As the jointer, square or not square to the table, I run each board making sure the X is away from the fence, as shown.

L’autre moitié du joint est passé de façon à ce que le triangle soit face au guide.

The other half of the joint is run in a fashion that the triangle is facing the fence.

Ce faisant, même si je guide n’est pas parfaitement d’équerre à la table, ces angles complémentaires garantissent un panneau collé parfaitement plat.

Doing so, even if the fence is not perfectly square to the table, those complementary angles ensure a perfectly flat glued up panel.

Instant Magnetic Shelf / Tablette magnétique instantanée

J’ai trouvé une façon geniale pour utiliser ces aimants de soudeurs comme étagère (ou tablettte), où je le veux ou là où il y a nécessité.

I found a clever way to use such welder’s magnets for as shelf, wherever I want or need it.

J’ai rainuré une chute pour y visser cette mince plaque de métal de 1/16″ (2mm). À bien y penser, deux vielles lames de scie à métaux ou une vieille règle de métal auraient également fait le travail.

I grooved a scrap to screw this 1/16″ (2mm) thin metal plate on. After thoughts, two old hack saw blades or an old steel ruler would have done the job as well.

Les aimants, prédestinés entre autres pour le 90°, y collent instantanément.

The magnets, predestined for the 90°, stick instantly to it.

Puisqu’elles collent sur tous métaux, je peux avoir l’étagère instantanée mentionnée plus haut à différents endroits.

Since they stick to all metals, I can have the above mentioned instant shelf in different locations.
