The answer : A reference line aligned with the saw blade !
The ideal would be engraving a line. You would think about using a ruler and a metal scribing pen, but the risk the ruler would shift under lateral pressure is evident.
It would be preferable to move and lock the rip to scribe the line, as shown.
If your rip fence doesn’t contact the table saw top (this gap being handy to gather saw dust), add a hardwood cleat (or MDF) between the saw blade and the fence.
It’s s simple as that, but it can be better.
With a finger, spread white latex paint (water-based) over the scribed line.
Five minutes later, smoothly wipe off the excess with a rag, perpendicularly.
And one hour later, when the paint is dry, sand with a very fine sandpaper, and you’ll be left with a fine white line.
From now on it will be very easy to align a pencil mark with the saw blade.

Simple et tout simplement génial !
Bravo
Simple et surtout pratique !
Merci.
Serge, this is an excellent idea and using the rip fence is also brilliant. What kind of pen are you scribing the line with? Never seen one before.
cheers
Mark
Thanks Mark. This is the link to the tool I purchased.
Best,
Serge
Good timing Serge. I’ll be shopping at this store next week so I’ll be able to pick one of these up. Another of the many good reason why I have to keep following you. 🙂
Cheers
Mark
Mark, Lucky you to walk into this store ! Please bring along your credit card ! 🙂
Best,
Serge
Serge, I won’t be spending as much as I would if I was by myself. My wife will be with me :).
Cheers
Mark
I trust you Mark. Happy shopping ! I heard that on site they have a clearance section.
Happy travelling too.
Best,
Serge
Thanks for the great idea…
Simple et brillant, comme d’habitude!
Your blog is very informative/entertaining, however with the new background it is nearly impossible to read it in a lot of cases because the words and background are too much the same.
Laurence
I’m sorry about that Laurence. On my side, everything is okay and I didn’t get any other comments about that. Besides that, I didn’t change the background, in fact, I can’t from my end. I suggest you try on another computer just to see what will happen.
Good luck !
Serge
Another great one, Serge!
Bonjour Maître Serge.
I see only one problem with your idea. Saw bench manufacturers worldwide will now go out and shoot themselves for not thinking of this idea for themselves.
If not, let’s see how long it takes the first one to claim that the idea originated with him ! It’s gonna happen !
Perhaps all your fans can keep watch on your behalf for the first plagiariste and we can denounce him loudly.
A bientôt.
Tony
Merci Tony.
For this tip I’ve been inspired by my former Craftsman table saw (think 1980’s). This latter has a 1″ diameter thin yellow plastic disc imbedded on the tabletop on which you could draw a line aligned with the blade. Perhaps I am the plagiarist ! 🙂
Au plaisir…
I’ve seen those and had no idea what purpose they served! “scales fell from [her] eyes”!
Learning is another benefit from sharing !
Best,
Simple et pratique, bravo…
Merci.
En effet, parfois c’est si simple !
Au plaisir…
Bonjour! (Schoolboy French from more than 50 years ago) Greetings from ‘down under’ in Melbourne, Australia! I really enjoy hearing about all your various projects! Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and New Year! Best Wishes, Graeme 🤔
Thank you Graeme. Happy Holidays to you and your family too.
Serge
Great idea !
By the way, the background of your website could be lighter in colour, so that it would not draw too much attention away from the importent content.
Otherwise, thanks for sharing.
Greetings from Germany.
Thank you Ewald,
If I understand correctly, my posts aren’t interesting enough so readers get distracted by the background.
If you are using Internet Explorer (I don’t know if it works with other browsers), press the CTRL key while you roll your mouse to enlarge (widen) the center part, therefore diminishing (narrowing) the too dark background. Holding CTRL while pressing the + key on the numeric keypad does the same.
Greetings from Québec and Happy Holidays !
