Raboter et niveler une bande de bois massif avec une toupie (défonceuse) ne peut être plus facile qu’avec cette technique sur une table à toupie horizontale. Au cours des années j’ai essayé plusieurs autres méthodes et/ou gabarits, je vais toutefois rester fidèle à celle-ci pour un temps.
Remarquez qu’avec un guide très haut, cette méthode devrait être tout aussi efficace sur une table à toupie conventionnelle, quoique le MDF serait plus complexe à fixer temporairement.
Trimming solid edge banding with a router can’t be easier when using this technique on a horizontal router table. Over the years I’ve tried many other methods and/or jigs, but I’ll stick with this one for a while.
Notice that with a very tall fence, this method should be as effective on a conventional router table, besides the fact that the MDF would be a bit complex to secure.
Après avoir sécurisé ma table à toupie horizontale maison sur l’établi, j’installe une fraise à ébarber de 1/2″ (13mm) dans la toupie et je règle la profondeur à un peu plus que l’épaisseur de la bande de bois massif (environ 1/16″ ou 2mm).
After clamping my shop-made horizontal router table to my workbench, I install a 1/2” (13mm) flush trim bit in the router and set the depth to a bit more than the thickness of the solid edge banding (about 1/16″ or 2mm).
Ensuite je dépose un tapis antidérapant sur la table, m’assurant qu’il évite la fraise, suivi par une plaque dure et glissante, tel un MDF 1/4″ (6 mm), tel que montré.
Then I drop an anti-skid router pad on the router tabletop, making sure to clear the router bit, followed by a hard and slippery material slab, like a 1/4” (6mm) MDF, as shown.
La prochaine étape est d’ajuster la hauteur de la fraise au niveau du dessus du MDF. Utiliser le roulement à billes comme référence est beaucoup plus facile que les couteaux. Je préfère commencer plus bas, faire une coupe test, et revenir ajuster à nouveau la hauteur.
The next step is to adjust the height of the bit flush with the top of the MDF. Using the bearing as reference point is much easier than using the cutters themselves. I rather start lower, make a test cut, then come back and fine-tune the height.
Finalement, j’alimente ma pièce en la glissant sur le MDF tout en gardant contact avec le guide, et ce tout étant bien à plat et stable.
Finally, I feed the stock through sliding my workpiece on the MDF and tight against the fence, still being flat and stable.
