Since pin nails have no head and are so tiny, it’s hard to say if any nails were shot or not from by pneumatic nailer. In a recent project (read bad experience) I came up with the idea of using my small Wizard metal detector (sample) to check for missing pin nails. It works !

This is also a good way to make use of such good and otherwise rarely used tool, except for pallets.

I wonder if a strong magnet would work ?

Yes, small neodymium magnets work well – they have to be small so that the mass is also small – you can place them over a nail hole (or in the vicinity) and the magnet will stick to it (or at least exhibit some attraction.

I kept a roll of them in my work overalls until one day they fell out somewhere in the garden – a sad day.

    • Gary, thank you for your input. You just thought me what rare-earth magnets really are. I have few 1/4″ cylinders, about 1″ long, and I’ll conduct my own experience today. Too bad you lost yours in the garder. Did you think about hauling a steel pipe or angle iron on the ground, let’s say with a rope, so your magnet would stick on it ?
