Building a Cajõn #3 La fabrication d’un cajõn

Pour le panneau arrière j’utilise du contreplaqué de 1/4″ (gauche). Pour la façade, nommée Tapa, j’ai récupéré celui de droite d’une porte creuse de contreplaqué en lauan. Celui de la façade doit être de bonne qualité et avoir au moins trois plis.

For the back panel I’m using 1/4″ plywood (left). For the facade, called Tapa, I salvaged the right one from a lauan plywood hollow door. The one for the facade must be good quality plywood and have at least three plies.

Je coupe les panneaux de la même largeur que le caisson avec une lame aux dents très fines.

I rip the panels the same width as the casing with a fine tooth blade.

Je coupe une extrémité d’équerre avec mon coupe panneaux et l’autre extrémité, parallèle selon la hauteur du caisson, en glissant les contreplaqués contre le guide parallèle.

I cut one end square using my panel cutter and the opposite end, parallel according to the height of the casing, sliding both plywood against the rip fence.

La façade doit être poncée très douce (pensez doigts !)

The facade must be sanded very smooth (think fingers !)

Pour la même raison, les bords doivent aussi être poncés très doux et arrondis.

For the same reason, the edges must also be sanded smooth and rounded over.

Je dois maintenant percer un trou central de ± 4″  à environ le tiers de la hauteur du panneau arrière. Je vais toutefois éliminer ce nœud.

Now I must drill a ± 4″ center hole at about the third of the height of the back panel. I will however get rid of this knot.

Le trou peut être coupé à la scie sauteuse, mais je préfère utiliser ce coupe cercle à la perceuse à colonne.

The hole can be cut with a jigsaw, but I rather use this circle cutter at the drill press.

Le trou devant servir de poignée de transport (et de sortie pour le son), il est impératif qu’il soit très bien poncé.

The hole being meant to be used as a carrying handle (and for the sound to escape), it is imperative to sand it smooth.

Ici  je finalise le Tapa (façade) au papier 500 grains.

Here I finalizing the Tapa (facade) with a 500 grit sandpaper.
