Shopmade Foot Switch / Interrupteur à pied maison

Quelques-unes unes de mes toupies ont l’interrupteur sur le corps de l’outil, loin des poignées, nécessitant la prise de l’outil d’une seule main alors que l’autre est dirigée vers l’interrupteur. Et chacun sait qu’une toupie, lors du démarrage, exerce un contrecoup qui n’est pas sans risque.

À une fraction du prix d’un modèle commercial, j’ai fabriqué cet interrupteur à pied pour garder mes deux mains sur la toupie et ainsi maintenir l’outil stable et sécuritaire lors des démarrages.

Few of my routers have the switch on the body, far away from the handles, meaning I must hold the tool with only one hand while the other reaches for the switch. And anyone knows that a router, when starting, exerts an hazardous torque.

At a fraction of a commercial model, I fabricated this foot switch to keep both of my hands on the router and doing so holding the tool stable and safe when started.

Premièrement, deux boîtes électriques utilitaires sont boulonnées ensemble, le côté de l’une sur le dessous de l’autre, comme montré.

J’ai utilisé deux boîtes électriques utilitaires de cette façon parce que j’ai pensé que la prise de courant de l’outil pourrait nuire lorsque mon pied cherche à atteindre l’interrupteur. Ayant placé la prise électrique sur le côté, la prise de courant de l’outil et son fil sont loin de l’endroit où mon pied frappe l’interrupteur. D’ailleurs, avec certains outils je compte y brancher simultanément un aspirateur.

First, two utility electrical boxes are bolted together, the side of one to the underside of the other, as shown.

I used two utility boxes bolted together in that fashion because I thought the plug of the tool would interfere when reaching for the switch with my foot. Having the duplex outlet on the side, the plug and the cord are far away from where my foot hits the switch. Besides that, with certain tools I plan to simultaniously plug a shop vac to it.

Vous aurez besoin de deux boîtes électriques et des couvercles appropriés, de pinces, de tournevis, d’un couteau ou un dénudeur, d’un interrupteur à bouton poussoir, d’une prise électrique murale (double ou simple), de fils électriques et d’une prise à trois broches et son fil.

You will need two utility electrical boxes and appropriate cover plates, pliers, screwdrivers, a knife or a wire stripper, a push button switch, an outlet (single or double), electric wires, a three prung plug and its cord.

Pour empêcher le tout de glisser sur le plancher de ciment de mon atelier lors de l’utilisation avec mon pied, j’ai ajouté un morceau de caoutchouc au dessous, collé avec du ruban adhésif double face.

To prevent the whole thing from sliding on the concrete floor of my shop when used with my foot, I added a piece of rubber from under, using double-sided tape.

Mon nouvel interrupeur, placé au pied de mon banc de travail de façon à ce que je ne trébuche pas sur lui, est mon nouveau compagnon lors de l’utilisation des outis requérrant mes deux mains.

My new switch, laying a the foot of my workbench in a fashion that I won’t trip on it, is my new companion when I use tools that require my two hands.

Sans être électricien, voici comment j’ai fait le branchement, du moins pour l’amérique du nord　: Le fil noir du cordon d’alimentation est branché à une borne de l’interrupteur (pour cette photo j’ai utilisé un interrpeur mural standard). Un fil noir est blanché depuis l’autre borne de l’interrupteur jusqu’à la borne foncée de la prise de courant. Attaché du côté pâle de la prise de courant, un fil blanc est branché au fil blanc du cordon d’alimentation avec une marrette (ici orange). Le fil vert de mise à terre du cordon d’alimentation est vissé sur la boîte métallique de l’interrupteur alors que celui depuis la prise de courant est vissé sur l’autre boîte (obligatoire pour votre sécurité).

Without being an electrician, here’s how I made the connections, at least for North America: The black wire of the electric cord is connected to one terminal of the switch (for this picture I used a standard wall switch). A black wire is connected from the other terminal of the switch to the dark terminal side of the outlet. Tighten from the light color side of the outlet, a white wire is connected to the white wire of the electric cord with a wire nut (here orange). The green ground wire from the electric cord is screwed to the metal box of the switch while the one from the outlet is screwed to the other box (a must for your safery).
