Interrupteurs sécurisés / Safer Switches

Avez-vous déjà branché un outil portatif avec l’interrupteur à la position ON ? Moi oui; une toupie.

Récemment j’ai eu l’idée d’utiliser une peinture brillante jaune pour peindre tous les outils ayant un interrupteur potentiellement dangereux. Comme montré sur les photos, j’ai simplement glissé l’interrupteur à la position ON (non branché), étendu un peu de peinture brillante jaune avec un cotton tige (Q-tip) à l’endroit normalement recouvert par l’interrupteur lorsqu’en position OFF, et laissé sécher.

À l’exception des outils ayant un interrupteur à bascule, lequel je considère plus évident, j’ai peint les autres outils ayant un interrupteur potentiellement dangereux, comme montré.

Merci mon Dieu, j’ai encore tous mes doigts.

Pour moi maintenant jaune signifie DANGER !

 

Did you ever plug a portable power too with the switch on ? I did; a router.

Recently, I came up with the idea of using a bright yellow paint on all tools equiped with a potentially hazardous switch.

As shown on the photos, I simply slid the switches in the On position (unpluged), spread a little of bright yellow paint with a cotton swab ( Q-Tip) on the housing where it would be covered by the switch in the Off position, and let them dry.

Except for tools equiped with toggle switch, which I consider more evident, I painted all other tool switches that could be hazardous, as shown.

Thank God I still have all my fingers.

Now for me yellow means DANGER !

Miroir à la perceuse à colonne / Drill Press Mirror Tip

 

Êtes-vous d’accord à l’effet que percer avec une mèche Forster à la perceuse à colonne est un problème. Il faut se pencher vers la droite, ensuite vers la gauche, et/ou plier les genoux afin de centrer la pointe de la mèche sur le point de perçage de la pièce. Ces exercices doivent être répétées jusqu’à ce qu’on soit satisfait ou jusqu’à ce qu’on décide de percer.

 

J’ai finalement trouvé une solution qui accélère le processus et donne satisfaction, sans toutefois faire mal au dos et aux genoux.

 

Comme montré sur la photo de droite, un miroir supporté derrière la mèche est la solution pour centrer la pointe de la mèche sur le point de perçage. Descendre la pointe de la mèche tout près de la marque et déplacer la pièce à percer juste au bon endroit, tout en se tenant bien droit devant la perceuse à colonne. Il faut remarquer que ça prend quelques secondes pour s’habituer à s’orienter sur cette image inversée.

 

Comme montré sur la photo de gauche, le miroir est retenu dans une rainure d’environ 3/16″ de largeur pratiquée dans un morceau de bois afin qu’il soit incliné d’environ 60° pour le confort de l’opérateur.

 

Soit dit en passant, les magasins d’escomptes regorgent de petits miroirs.

 

 

 

 

 

Do you agree that boring a hole on the drill press using Forstner bits is a pain in the neck. You have to bend over on the rigth, then bend over on the left, and/or flex your knees to eyeball the fine point of the bit and the center mark of the workpiece. This fitness program must be repeated until you’re satisfied or until you’re fed up and you’re ready to commit.

 

I finaly find a solution that speeds up the process and brings satisfaction every time, without breaking my back and my knees.

 

As shown on photo at right, a mirror held upright on the back of the Forstner bit is the answer to get a perfect match between the fine point of the bit and the center mark. Set down the point of the bit just shy of the center mark then by moving the workpiece you get the perfect match while you’re standing up straight in front of the drill press. You’ll need few seconds though to get accustomed with the reverse image vs your moves to get to the fine point.

 

As shown on photo at left, the mirror stands on a piece of wood that have been slotted on the table saw to about 3/16″ wide so the mirror will slant enough to be at about 60° for the comfort of the operator.

 

By the way, discount stores have plenty of small mirrors.

Un étau à faces tendres / Soft Touch Vise

Je suis si content d’avoir eu l’idée d’appliquer du liège sur les faces de mes étaux. Les bois les plus tendres et les pièces finies ne risquent pas d’être abîmées avec ce liège de ¼” d’épaisseur. De plus, c’est tout à fait approprié pour retenir des pièces de formes diverses comme les goujons et les sphères de bois.

J’ai trouvé ce liège dans un centre de rénovation. Il est offert en rouleau et au pied carré. J’ai utilisé du ruban à tapis collé sur les deux faces pour fixer le liège aux étaux.

De plus, lorsque j’utilise mes serres parallèles K-Body, il n’y a pas de danger que l’enveloppe de plastique de ces dernières soit abîmée.

I’m so glad I came up with the idea of padding my workbench vise faces with cork. Even softer woods or finished workpieces don’t mar with these 1/4″ cork paddings. And it’s great to hold irregular stock such as dowels or wooden balls.

I found the cork at the home center. They offer it in roll and by square foot. I used double-faced tape to fasten the cork to the vise faces.

Also, when I use my vise to hold my K-Body parallel clamps, I’m not affraid the plastic casing will get damaged.

Sécurité au banc de scie / Table Saw Safety Tip

Peu après l’acquisition de ce nouveau banc de scie, j’ai rapidement constaté que j’avais un problème de sécurité.

Lorsque je suis devant la scie pour effectuer des coupes courantes, je ne peux voir l’emplacement exact de l’interrupteur. Même si cet interrupteur possède une grosse plaque d’arrêt sécuritaire, je ne peux la voir. Si une urgence se présente (ce qui fut le cas), je perds d’importantes secondes à chercher aveuglement sous la barre guide, avec la main gauche, pour atteindre la fameuse plaque d’arrêt.

Le simple truc que je veux partager est d’utiliser un gros crayon à encre permanent pour indiquer par des flèches dessinées sur la barre guide l’endroit exact où se situe l’interrupteur, comme indiqué sur les photos.

With my new table saw, I quickly find out that I had a safety issue.

When I stand close to the front of the table saw for usual tasks, I don’t see where the switch is exactly. Even if it’s a large safety paddle switch, I don’t see it. When emergencies occured (and they did) I lost important seconds searching around under the rip fence guide rail, with my left hand, to find the damn switch.

The simple tip I would like to share is, using a large black permanent marker, draw arrows on the rip fence support rail, as shown on attached photos, to clearly indicate where the switch is.

Un triangle pour diriger la toupie / Router Feed Direction Triangle

Fini la confusion pour déterminer la direction adéquate pour guider la toupie à main levee.

Même un bricoleur expérimenté peut parfois être confus avec la direction d’alimentation de la toupie, particulièrement lors de coupes intérieures et lors d’utilisation de gabarit. J’ai finalement trouvé la façon d’être aDROIT . La clé du succès est de se concentrer sur le petit triangle formé entre les index et les pouces, comme montré sur les photos. Simplement pointer la pointe du triangle vers le rebord de la pièce à façonner, peu importe s’il s’agit d’une coupe intérieure ou extérieure. Simplement imaginer un triangle, ou former un triangle avec les mains au-dessus de la pièce à façonner. Alors, toujours guider vers la DROITE lorsqu’on travaille la toupie à main levée. Fini la confusion. Si vous coupez un cercle avec un guide spécialisé, il faut utiliser le triangle pour qu’il pointe sur la partie que vous voulez conserver et dirigier la toupie vers la DROITE. Si vous utilisez un guide en bronze avec un gabarit (comme sur la photo de droite), il faut pointer le triangle et appuyer le guide sur le gabarit et dirigier la toupie vers la DROITE. Si vous voulez arrondir un rebord, pointer le triangle vers ce rebord et diriger la toupie vers la DROITE. Si vous utilisez un guide droit pour faire une rainure, pointer le triangle vers ce guide et diriger la toupie vers la DROITE. Ça fonctionne à merveille! Essayez-le! Fini la confusion.

 

À la table à toupie, TOUJOURS diriger la pièce de DROITE vers la GAUCHE lors d’utilisation du guide arrière.

End router feed direction confusion when handheld routing.

Even an experienced woodworker gets confused with router feed direction, specially when it comes to dealing with inside edges and template routing.  I finally found a way to get it done RIGHT.   The key is to concentrate on a small triangle made by the two forefingers and the two thumbs, as shown on attached photos. Just point the top of the triangle against the edge you’re working on, no matter if it’s an inside or outside cut. Just imagine the triangle, or shape the triangle with your hands over the workpiece edge you’re working on.  Then, always go RIGHT when working freehand. No more confusion.   If you’re cutting a circle on a workpiece with a trammel, just use the triangle pointing against the side you want to keep and go RIGHT. If you’re using a guide bushing (right photo), just use the triangle pointing against the side edge you want to shape and go RIGHT. If you’re rounding over an edge, just use the triangle pointing against the side edge you want to shape and go RIGHT. If you’re following a straight edge to make a groove or a dado, just use the triangle pointing against the straight edge and go RIGHT.   It works great!  Try it!  And don’t be confused anymore.

At the router table, ALWAYS feed the workpiece from RIGHT to LEFT when using the guide fence.

Rangement pour guenilles et sacs de plastique / Rag and Plastic Bag Storage

À presque chaque session de travail dans mon atelier de sous-sol je suis content d’avoir eu l’idée d’utiliser les cartons vides de 3 litres de vin comme rangement/distributeur de guenilles et de sacs de plastique. D’ailleurs, après chaque session de travail je célèbre cette idée avec un bon verre de vin rouge !!!

Après avoir ouvert le dessus et jeté le sac de vin vide au recyclage, je scelle le couvert avec du ruban adhésif large et j’utilise le trou de la poignée pour insérer des petites guenilles et des sacs de plastique. Sur le côté, à travers la cavité d’où sortait le robinet, j’ai accès à mes guenilles ou mes sacs, un à la fois, pour utilisation quotidienne dans l’atelier.

C’est bien d’avoir des guenilles à portée de la main pour nettoyer les dégâts et des sacs de plastique pour m’en débarrasser.

On most woodworking sessions in my basement workshop I thank myself having thought of the idea of using empty 3 litre wine boxes as storage/dispenser for rags and plastic bags. After each session I celebrate my idea with a good glass of red wine !!!

After opening the top and disposed the empty wine bag in the recycle bin, I seal the lid with wide scotch tape and I use the finger pull hole to fill the container with small rags or plastic bags. Down the side, through the flap where the tap was located, I get my rags or bags one at a time to use every day in the shop.

It’s nice to have rags on hand to clean all mess and plastic bags to fill them up.
