Last sunday I was invited at my youngest daughter’s new appartment. It’s a rent on the third floor of an old 1910 building. She asked me to bring my circular saw to cut a Melamine particleboard to act as a desktop on top of two small file cabinets to hold her computer.
While I was there she asked for more help to install L-brackets on the wall for shelving for her books. Since this task was not planned, I didn’t have my level in my tool box and you know what, she didn’t have one either.
After a break I came up with the idea of using a cylindrical drinking glass to act as a level. We found the level line by holding a shelf horizontally on which the glass was able to roll around sideways until its stopped when the board was on the level. With that line we were able to install the L-brackets properly leveled. Since a picture worths a thousand words, I reproduced the setup in my shop.
Let’s drink to that!

Smart!
Thanks, Jim. I always told my boss that coffee brakes are productive!
Best,
Another great idea my friend.
That is one I need to put in my back pocket for future use.
Thanks serge.
Thanks, Eric.
There’s always a solution. And I believe the best solution is letting time bring it up.
Best,
Great improvisation, Serge! Just make sure not to let this level (or any level, for that matter) hit the ground.
Chris
Great tip, Chris. You just broke the glass as a new tipster!
Best,
Just excellent! I went out to my shop just to play around with it, my wife decided her glasses and the concrete floor would not go good together so I used a marble, worked the same. A quick check with a level confirmed the cleverness of the idea. Use a glass over a marble, easier to hold the board level.
Thanks, John. I’m glad to went out to your shop and came up with another good tip. Any hard round or cylindrical object would work.
Best,
